President's Message

From the Hack,

Good day to all curlers,

I trust you all are enjoying your season so far.

Entering the Christmas break, I am happy to see all of our leagues running so well. Our bonspiels have been exceptional and the Family Fun spiel and Legion Challenge are already filled. Rest assured that your dedicated volunteers will be busy over the holidays. The ice will be flooded, the rocks will be turned. Our website continues to evolve with the introduction of a new interactive calendar and other changes/upgrades are underway. The board continues to run the business of the Almonte Curling Club.

The board of directors wants to get to know you better. As a volunteer organization we are always looking for new talent to guide us into the future. Our dedicated board members, convenors and committee leads are doing a wonderful job but at some point each of us will be looking to pass the torch. With that in mind, we would like to find out who you are, what you do, and what you’d like to contribute to the club. You can see the list of board members on the website under Our Club.  Feel free to contact any of us to share your interest in our organization or ask any questions you have about how things are done.   We are always happy to meet or email or chat over a post-game beverage.

Some members have raised the question of the long-standing tradition of buying a post-game drink for the losing team and then having that reciprocated. For some this is not an issue, for others it is. The ACC encourages you to do what makes you comfortable. Curling is above all, an opportunity to play a game and to get to know your fellow club members better.  The easiest way to do that is to socialize following the game.  You should never feel pressure to drink or to buy a drink. One way to address this concern is to simply clarify your personal preference with your counterpart before the game starts.  That could be a statement like “Win or lose, I’m happy to get my own beverage after the game.”   The most important message is that, as a club, we respect the right of members to follow their own preference knowing this is acceptable to all of us.

I would like to personally wish you all a very merry Christmas and a wonderful 2025!!

I look forward to hitting the ice again after the break and admiring all the new grippers you each got for Christmas!!!

Don.
