Volunteer
Volunteering is fun! Volunteer opportunities are posted on MEMBERS HOME > My Volunteer Interests so visit regularly. Once your volunteer work is done, you’ll get your $80 opt-out fee back!
- Don’t forget to sign up with your potluck dish for the U5 bonspiel!
- There are lots of bonspiels coming up and we could use your help in the kitchen. Check the volunteer page and sign up now.
- We can always use more volunteers with Little Rocks on Friday afternoons. Contact Keith Lascelles at youth@almontecurling.ca for more information, or come to the club on Fridays at 4:30.
Leagues
- There are still spots in the new social league on Sundays from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. If you’re not sure you can commit to the full six weeks, drop in and you’ll be put on a team. You can sign up for the full six-weeks at Events > Events Registration > Sunday Afternoon Social Trial.
- There are still spots in the Sturling league on Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 p.m. if you have limited mobility but still want to curl at the ACC. Each team member stays at one end of the sheet for the entire game and takes turns delivering their rocks and skipping from that end. Drop in and check it out or contact Cliff Bennett through the website.
Bonspiels
You can register for club bonspiels on the ACC website under EVENTS > Events Registration.
- There are still a couple of spots on the team defending the Quebec Cup against the Mont Bruno Curling Club on February 2 at 1:30! Contact Ian MacLellan through the website for more information.
- Registration for the President’s Cup Challenge trials on February 15 is open until January 24! The Challenge will be hosted this year by the Arnprior Curling Club on March 7 to 9. Please note that there will only be trials when there are more teams than openings in a specific category, but that all teams interested in playing in the President’s Cup Challenge must register for the trials.
- The QUAD TOWNE CHALLENGE on February 23 is an annual interclub bonspiel with clubs from PERTH, CARLETON PLACE, SMITHS FALLS AND ALMONTE competing for municipal curling supremacy. Contact the coordinator, Gerry Coleman at clubmgr@almontecurling.ca for more information or if you’re interested in playing.

Meet the ACC Team
The ACC management team is made up of 10 members of the board, and about 30 volunteers who carry out other roles like league management, volunteer coordination, bonspiel coordination, and ice management. We’d like to introduce you to these people, who make sure that curling at the ACC is well managed and fun for all of us. Please feel free to talk to any of us about what we do and what you’d like to contribute to the club.
- Barb Button is the ACC treasurer, a key role in any organization! Barb had stopped curling due to arthritic knees but when a friend suggested stick curling she decided to give it a try and is happy to be back on the ice as a member of the ACC. Outside of curling you’ll find Barb on the golf course or in her vegetable garden in the summer, and in winter other than curling she’ll be hiking or snowshoeing with her dog. Barb took on the role of treasurer when someone at the club, who knew her background, put her name forward. She agreed, knowing that this role is sometimes hard to fill. With a finance-based education and work experience, she’s contributed her knowledge as a volunteer treasurer for a few different organizations. Although Barb hadn’t really thought about volunteering at the ACC, she’s glad she accepted. “It’s a great way to get to know people and how the club functions. Non- profit organizations rely on volunteers to keep things running smoothly and being part of that is incredibly rewarding.”
Did you know?
There are simple things you can do to help the game move smoothly so that getting 8 ends in is easy. You can see our updated rules and etiquette on the website under Curling > Etiquette, Roles and Rules.
- Keep the ice clean. Change your shoes before you go on the ice and use the boot brush and sticky pads to clean the bottom of your shoes. Sand, grit and dirt are the ice’s worst enemy.
- Don’t leave a hand or knee touching the ice after delivering the rock. Stand up quickly or squat with only feet on the ice. Heat from body parts melts the ice.
- No player shall use any footwear or equipment that may damage the surface of the ice.
Club
- Once again it’s respiratory virus season, so let’s help keep everyone healthy! Use fist bumps or broom taps as greeting, use hand sanitizer, and please stay home if you’re sick.
- This week is Ice Tech Appreciation Week, so we’d like to recognize our Ice Tech Rick Picard, our Ice Managers Mark Dowker and Keith Lascelles, and all the ACC volunteers who keep our ice in top shape. Thanks everyone! Check out this article about Rick and the work he does at the ACC.
- Stephanie Birtwistle is our OVCA and Curling Ontario rep, and is sharing information about some valuable Curling Ontario webinars. Most of these sessions deal with curling club management, but on March 11 there’s a webinar for women interested in improving their skills in vice and skip positions. If you’re interested in any of these free webinars please email Stephanie through the club website and she’ll see that you’re registered.
50/50 Draws!
- This week's winner is Brenda Dickson. Congratulations Brenda! Your winnings will be sent to you through etransfer.
- The 50/50 contributes directly to the club’s fundraising efforts and with that we are announcing a prorated entry fee of $26 for those who wish to join for the rest of the season. Just send $26 to etransfer@almontecurling.ca. Please note 50\50 and your name in the comment section of your transfer.
